A significant milestone has been reached in the preservation of the Old Gundagai Primary School, a cherished historical landmark that has long served as a hub for local community groups. The installation of a new roof ensures that the building remains a safe, functional, and vibrant space for residents for years to come.
The project was made possible thanks to the successful application made by the Gundagai Men’s Shed who received $138,206 through Round 5 of the NSW Coalition Government’s Stronger Country Communities Fund.
Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke visited the site last month to see this invaluable asset to the community given a new lease on life with a new roof, guttering, drainage and electrical upgrades.
The historic building has provided essential services to a wide range of community organisations, including a space for members of Gundagai Men’s Shed to meet and showcase their craftmanship and skill, the CWA to hold their meetings, the Baptist Church meeting spot and weekly drawing group use the space to come together for artistic pursuits.
“The new roof will not only protect the building from deterioration but also ensure that it continues to be a place where our community can gather, connect, and grow together,” Ms Cooke said.
"This project highlights the importance of maintaining our historical assets, as the building continues to serve its mission of supporting local groups and fostering community engagement,
"The preservation of this building not only honours our past but also supports the present-day needs of our community." she said.
