Gundagai’s Indi Cooper to Represent Australia

Proud Wiradjuri woman Miss Indiana “Indi” Cooper has been selected to represent Australia in athletics at the Commonwealth Games to be held from 28 July to 8 August in Birmingham, England.

The 15 year old para-athlete is one of five Kurt Fearnley Scholarship recipients selected to the Australian Commonwealth Games Team for the 2022 Games.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke is encouraging the community to get behind their local hero, set to complete in the 100m sprinting event scheduled on 2 August.

“I am so proud of Indi and look forward to cheering her on along with her family, her hometown of Gundagai and all of Australia,” Ms Cooke said.

“What an inspirational young woman, with the determination and drive to achieve her goal of competing on the world stage, one of the youngest to ever do so.”

A member of Tumut and District Little Athletics, Miss Cooper was inspired by Isis Holt competing at the 2016 Rio Paralympics.

“I said to myself then, that’s what I want to do,” Miss Cooper said.

Miss Cooper is determined to break the record for the 100m sprint currently set at 14.38 seconds, established by five-time Paralympic gold medallist Lisa McIntosh at Melbourne in 2006.
