Caravan owners in Cootamundra set to save big

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke has reminded caravan owners in the Cootamundra electorate that they will soon receive a 40 per cent discount in registering caravans and camper trailers.

“The changes will come into effect from today, November 1 2018,” Ms Cooke said.

“Rego can hit the hip pocket hard around this time of year, so I’m thrilled to announce caravan owners and hardworking families across the Cootamundra electorate will be up to $471 better off as a result of these changes.”

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said that the motor vehicle tax is part of the cost associated with registering a vehicle in NSW, but eligible caravan owners will now benefit from a reduction.

“Not only will this put money back into pockets, it will encourage more people to travel and do business in NSW,” Mr Perrottet said.

Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said the NSW Government recognised the need to reduce costs associated with these popular vehicles.

“These are big numbers and huge savings. The change will apply to towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers weighing up to 4.5 tonnes,” Mrs Pavey said.

KEY POINTS

  • 120,000 caravaners to benefit from the reduction
  • Savings range from $46 to $471
  • The 40 per cent reduction applies to privately-owned towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers, weighing 255kg to 4.5 tonne
  • A pensioner who elects to have free registration for a vehicle other than their caravan or camper trailer is still be eligible for the 40 per cent discount

Towed caravans and purpose-built camper trailers that are privately registered will be eligible for the 40 per cent reduction in motor vehicle tax. Customers will still be required to pay the standard NSW registration fees including the annual fee of $65.
