Saving lives on Central West Roads

Motorists will experience a safer, smoother drive in Cowra thanks to a $2.4 million safety package to upgrade three local roads.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said road safety was at the forefront of upgrades, with Canowindra Road, Lachlan Valley Way and the Mid Western Highway sharing in the funding.

Ms Cooke joined Cowra Shire Mayor Bill West, General Manager Paul Devery and Director Infrastructure and Operations Dirk Wymer alongside RMS Western Region Director, Alistair Lunn, Manager Maintenance Delivery Craig Matthews and Project Manager Angelo Emmanuel to announce the completion of the works today.

“A 2.7 kilometre section of Canowindra Road, south of Canowindra, benefited from a $630,000 investment to improve driver vision by removing trees, installing safety barriers and widening the shoulder at the Yuruga Road intersection,” Ms Cooke said.

“This project was completed by Cowra Shire Council, and supported some 20 jobs.

“A further $425,000 was provided for improvements to 2.5 kilometres of Lachlan Valley Way, north of Gooloogong and $1.46 million for improvements to 23 kilometres of the Mid Western Highway near Cowra.

“Work on the projects involved installing safety barriers and providing clear zones along the roadway to give motorists more area to recover their vehicle if it leaves the road.

“Cowra Shire Council also oversaw the upgrades, with the projects supporting up to 66 people working on the two projects.

“The ultimate aim is to ensure all road users have a safer journey and make it home to their families.”

The works were funded under the Saving Lives on Country Roads program in September 2018 and completed within the financial year.
