Temora Town Band scores grant to start youth orchestra

The work of the Temora Town Band to help bring music to those less fortunate has received a significant boost with state government funding to help get a new youth orchestra off the ground.

Cootamundra MP Steph Cooke today announced the band will receive $1300 to provide instruments, music lessons and band experience free of charge to support the formation of the Temora Kids Orchestra.

“The band is a very much-loved part of the electorate and I have great memories of their performances,” Ms Cooke said.

“I’m so pleased to see the joy of music spreading among younger generations in Temora.

“There’s now a local orchestra in the works that they can practice, perform and grow as musicians with and I’m so proud the government has been able to play a part in that,” she added.

Temora Town Band secretary Denise Clements said the band were absolutely thrilled.

“We’ll be able to provide free music lessons and free instrument hire to help establish our youth orchestra, especially for those who can’t afford musical instruments themselves,” she said.

“It’s something we don’t have offered in Temora, and the town band just wanted to make sure those that couldn’t access instruments or lessons could.”

The youth orchestra will meet weekly and those interested are encouraged to get in touch at temoratownband.com or on Facebook.

The band is amongst 23 community brass and concert bands across the state sharing

$27,200 in 2018 Community Band Development Grants Program funding from the NSW Government.

Formed in 1895, the Band Association of NSW is one of the oldest and longest serving volunteer organisations in the country and has been proudly supported by the NSW Government for more than 25 years.
