Two events to show gratitude for Cootamundra-Gundagai grandparents

Generations of families and friends will come together to celebrate seniors in the Cootamundra electorate thanks to NSW Government grants for two activities to show gratitude for local grandparents.

Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke today announced that Cootamundra Gundagai Regional Council has received $2000 to bring Grandparents Day to life in the local community.

“Grandparents Day is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to the seniors in our community, and the local Council is offering a great way to give back with a beeswax workshop in Gundagai and a family fair in Cootamundra,” Ms Cooke said.

“I hope to see Cootamundra and Gundagai residents young and old enjoying Grandparents Day and I encourage everyone to bring their grandparents or the older people in their lives along to events on the day.”

Cootamundra-Gundagai Mayor Abb McAlister said Council will celebrate older people and grandparents by offering two events ensuring everyone in the community can get involved.

“Our grandparents are precious and I’m thrilled that not one but two local events have secured NSW Government funding so we can thank them,” Cr McAlister said.

NSW Grandparents Day celebrates the role grandparents and older people play in communities across NSW, and is held annually on the last Sunday in October. The day was launched by the NSW Government in 2011.

Minister for Ageing Tanya Davies said that more than $200,000 has been delivered to councils, schools and community organisations to hold Grandparents Day celebrations this October.

“Grandparents Day gives us a chance to recognise the older people in our lives for the invaluable contributions they make to their families and communities,” Mrs Davies said.

Last year, the NSW Government doubled the amount of funding available to organisations so they could deliver a diverse range of events that reach more people.

In 2018, NSW Grandparents Day will be celebrated on Sunday 28 October, while the NSW Grandparent of the Year Awards will be presented at a ceremony on 24 October.

Nominations are currently open for the 2018 Grandparent of the Year Award and the Grandparents Day Photography Competition, and will close in early September.

Local events will be published on the Grandparents Day website in coming weeks. For more information and to submit an Award nomination or photography competition entry, please visit: www.grandparentsday.nsw.gov.au.
